West Point Ballet Classes:
Elementary Division: Ballet Technique.
Intermediate Division: Ballet Technique, Repertoire, and pre-Pointe/Pointe.
Advanced Division: Daily Ballet Technique, Repertoire, Pointe, Classical Variations, Pas de Deux, Modern, Contemporary, Conditioning for dancers and Character Dance.
Adult Classes: Character Dance Class, Ballet Technique Class.
Descriptions:
*Ballet Technique: 1h or 1.5hour class based on the classical ballet training curriculum depending on level of study. Class is composed of barre combinations, that progress into center, small allegro (jumps), and big allegro.
*Repertoire: Studies the classical ballet repertoire for show performances. Develop style and artistic ability, while enhancing self esteem and ballet culture for the students.
*Pointe: Students will begin to dance en pointe when their technique and body strength has reached the appropriate level, generally not before age 11.
*Classical Variations: Studies the classical variations (solos) of the classical repertoire. Students have the opportunity to work and develop a special and principal character from different ballets.
*Pas de Deux (Partnering class): Students have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a partner to develop very important skills needed for show performances. Turns, lifts, and relationship between male and female dancers will be executed.
*Modern/Contemporary: Heavy focus on basic human movement, concentrating on contraction and release. Long fluid motion using the student's body weight is the goal.
*Conditioning: Helps the dancer to develop flexibility and strength. Working on the individual's specific needs to improve their ballet technique (such as turn-out, ankle strength, flexibility)
*Character Dance, or European Folk Dances: is a specific subdivision of classical dance. It is the stylized representation of a traditional folk or national dance, mostly from European countries, and uses movements and music which have been adapted for the theater.Character dance is integral to much of the classical ballet repertoire. A good example of character dance within ballet is the series of national dances which take place at the beginning of Act III of Swan Lake. The ballet Don Quixote as well as Paquita also features many character variations based on traditional Spanish dances. Popular character dance adaptations for ballet also include the national dances of Hungary, Russia, Poland, Italy and Spain: csárdás, mazurka, tarantella, flamenco, etc.Character dances develop expressive power of movements, style, co-ordination and rhythm.
